Long Live Summer

Saturday, June 27, 2009

I'm a cool weather sorta gal, so is Denise. This makes our friendship solidly based in dread of the summer and the hot, humid weather. But now, we live in blessed air conditioned comfort.

Even as a kid, I loved some parts of summer, but hated the nights that you couldn't sleep due to the heat. Yes, there was no school ( YEAH!!!), and swimming (never enough for me, could have gone to the beach or lake everyday) and bike riding (my 'wheels', first taste of vehicular freedom, see two posts back).

For the last few years, I've started looking into the brilliant world of the portable air conditioner. Last year, I was crushed when I realized that due to illness, I could not afford an air conditioner. I cried. There was just no way. I vowed that next year would be different.

And it sure is. Yesterday, finally, I bought a huge, ugly but oh so wonderful 12,000 BTU air conditioner. I LOVE it. The salesman who sold the beloved beast to me, was laughing at my very obvious excitement and utter joy. It was a challenge in logistics to get it home, and much props to Bob and Lorraine for being the heroes of the summer.

So, now I can sew and not want to cry with sweating and heat induced exhaustion. I'm so so very happy. : )

Things I Won't Miss: the Metro Transit Experience

Thursday, June 25, 2009

Ah, Metro Transit.  How will I possibly live without you when I finally reach my goal and make it to my house in the country?  With blissful joy, that's how!

Instead of measuring the change of seasons by leaves on the trees or seasonal vegetables (as I dream of doing), the evolving Metro Transit experience is my guide.  Winter brings heavy coats, the  multiple layers meaning that sharing a seat becomes a little more intimate than one would like as you squish into the space.  Spring is wet.  Ballet flats should be avoided lest the pooling water full of winter salt soak the bottom of your pants, leaving the white crystalline stain that won't be removed until the next wash.  Very attractive.  Fall is the easiest.  Not too hot or too cool or too wet.

You may noticed I've skipped summer.  You see, there is just so much to say about summer.  First of all, humidity is often near 100%  here on the coast.  This leads to excruciating discomfort on all but very few air conditioned busses.  Those precious commodities seem reserved for the nicer areas of the city.  Maybe that's just my conspiracy theory.  The far worse problem of summer transit should be totally avoidable.  B.O.  Honestly, if you can kick someone off the bus because their perfume is too strong than why can't you boot someone who smells like they've never met a tube of deodorant?  And why are the numbers of the B.O. afflicted so high?  Can they not smell themselves?

I'll end my tale with the story of yesterday's bus trip.  I took a seat by myself and did not take notice of the guy sitting behind me.  When he got up to leave I realized that he was ordinary enough, nothing that would have alerted me to what I would experience.

I sat quietly, content that my very short bus ride would be uneventful.  Suddenly and VERY loudly the guy behind me yells "Montreal".  No explanation, just "Montreal".  I don't react, just think 'Hey maybe the guy likes Montreal'.   A few minutes later he yells just as suddenly and just as loud, "Comes and goes, just like an octopus!".  Harder not to react, but I've learned not to bother the 'eccentric' is the best option.  By the time he yelled "Lillian", I was getting off the bus.

Yup, always interesting.  Such is Metro Transit.

Car Love

Monday, June 22, 2009

I love cars. I've never had my own car...YET! My mom's car has felt very much like my car. I love renting a car, feels even more like my car. I dream constantly about having my own car. When it's slow at work, I 'make' my own cars.

I hate that luxury cars have only leather interiors. Poo on that. But mama wants a Jag-u-ar... A funny thing happened when I was 'building' my cars, I would select the cheapest models, and then, as I noticed this, and made a point of picking exactly what I want.

So, as you see, I've some of my current favorites here. It's fun to pretend that you just won the lottery, and see what you'd buy. Love it.

Fun Visit With Leesa

Thursday, June 18, 2009

Today was fun, because I got to see my buddy Leesa and her husband, Dan.

I haven't seen her in a few years, she moved away from the city, to the lovely country. *Sigh* She was my boss at a poopy retail job, but she really made it not poopy. There are always a herd of kitties in her house, they seem to sense she'll look after them. Yeah, she has a huge heart and biting wit. I really miss her. Funny, funny lady.

She dropped by to pick up her new bag, she bought the Slightly Sinister Summer Bag. How wonderfully supportive was that?

Yeah, hope I get to see her soon, have a nice beverage. Love nice beverages.

Stolen Idea - 25 Facts About Denise

Thursday, June 11, 2009

Stole this idea from our Twitter friend LaChatNoir.  Today I am doing my 25 facts and soon you will get to read Melina's.  I wonder how many will overlap.

1 - I have dyed my hair a lot.  It has been black, brown, red, pinky-red, red and black together, blonde, plummy black - you get the idea.  It is now red and I think I'll stick with it for awhile.

2 - I work at a bank which is absolutely ridiculous to anyone who knows me.  Seriously, I am not a banker-type.  There is only so long I will be able to fake it.

3 - I spent ages 10 to 16 dancing.  Studied ballet, modern and jazz and was in a youth company until I had to have my first of 2 knee surgeries to repair damage done to a joint that was already made wrong.

4 - My black cat named Solstice is my shadow.  She follows me everywhere, sleeps with me, and is sitting on me right now.  My cat Vanian  is more aloof with his affections, except with Melina.

5 - As a child I pretended my Barbies were Amish.  Yup, Amish.

6 - On the vegetarian / vegan spectrum I am 98 % towards the vegan side.  I will never eat an animal as there is no need.

7 - Melina and I became roommates because a the person I was sharing with at the time tried to kill me.  I didn't like a painting she put on the wall.  Melina lived upstairs and after being terrorized for another month we were like, "Hey, wanna move out?".  That was 12 years ago.

8 - In 5th grade I insisted on having the Halloween costume of a a Turkish lady and I would accept nothing else.

9 - I have been known to have a ... um ... I guess you could say a big mouth.  It is absolutely impossible for me to keep my mouth shut if I think something is wrong.  I do not 'play the game' well, which goes back to #2 re. not a banker.  Melina once said to someone suggesting that I might get myself into trouble "You may as well tell the sun not to shine or the wind not to blow as tell Denise to keep her mouth shut."

10 - When I was 25 I was diagnosed as bi-polar.  For a few years after that I was a little shaky but am now very well controlled.  I often say that my life only really started around the age of 28 - 29 because that was the first time I really was able to think as myself and not as the diseased me.

11 - I have an English degree and I write supernatural fiction and horror.  Have had a few stories published and am working on a novel.

12 - I have a phobia of frogs.  No idea where it comes from.  Think I may have died in a swamp in a past life.

13 - I have 4 sisters - Debbie, Donna, Darlene and Diane.  If that isn't enough, three of them married Davids.

14 - The children's choir I was in sang for the Queen.  Prince Philip came over to say hello when we were done so I often refer to him as 'my friend'.

15 - Am often known for my laugh which is rather loud.  It has alternately been described as "crawling into your head and making you crazy" and as "lovely as a cascade of pearls".  I am fond of the latter.

16 - As a kid I named my hands Lobster and Fish.  Fish was a girl and Lobster was a boy and they would go swimming together when I washed my hands and give each other little kisses.

17 - My family is Acadian.  There is no mutt-ness about me that I can find.  French all the way through, temper and all.  Vive l'Acadie! :)

18 - I have a list of tattoos planned and may actually be able to afford them.  I don't think you are ever too old to get a new  tattoo!!

19 - After many, many pitchers of Zombies I managed to learn to tie a cherry stem into a knot with my tongue.  Useless skill that has followed me from my early twenties!

20 - I wish I lived somewhere with more of a Latin community.  I would love to learn to Salsa, and Latin men are hot.

21 - I completely lack that whole adrenaline chasing thing that some people have.  My first thought when someone mentions skydiving or mountain climbing is "Uh, you could die!"

22 - I am allergic to the sun and am thus glow-in-the-dark pale.  That and the fact that left to my own devices I would have the sleep habits of an owl and wear a lot of black make my friends joke that I am, in fact, a vampire.  So where's my Edward!

23 - I am Wiccan, can read tarot a bit and have studied stones and Reiki.  There is so much more that I want to do!

24 - I am NOT one of those people who loved high school.  In fact, I often don't trust people if I feel they enjoyed high school too much.  That isn't natural.

25 - I am hungry.

That was harder than I thought it would be!

We Want-y More Stash-y

Tuesday, June 9, 2009

                                                          Melodysmartt

Yes, it's that time again. Full body fabric craving, me want more. My stash is, er, rather large, but I boldly ignore this problem. I want to buy pretty, pretty fabric.

This is me shopping vicariously. It's cheaper, and I can hold off on buying a scoach longer.

Things I'll Miss in Halifax

Sunday, June 7, 2009

These things are really few and far between. There are things I go see everyday that I will miss. Like these photos, it's the view from the bench that Denise and I take our break on. We have more 'business' meetings here than anywhere.  I love looking at the sky.

But, I still dream of the day that I only see this view when stopping by in a trip to Halifax, from my home in the valley. That will be a very fun day.

New Stuff

Friday, June 5, 2009

We are always trying to have something new in store, which with work, life, uber-demanding cats, seeing the odd ( and, man, are they ODD!!! HAHAHA!!! Ba-dum-dum! Ok, kidding.) friend, is a challenge.

Well, Denise made some simply FAB new earrings. Love them. I always want a pair for the 'house', which means we have an extra pair only for us to wear. You know, to test the merchandise. Which we have to do. Right. No, really, we do. We must. Quality control. Yes, that exactly what that is called. It's all for the good of our beloved customers. We love them.
As for me, I finally finished a new bag. I've been wanting to make it forever, and finally got it done. I really like it. I'd love one myself, but Denise would crown me. I'm lucky I got to keep a tote. Not that Denise is the boss of me, she's just bossy. HAHAHA!!! Again, just kidding around.

Ok, everyone, go have a look and let us know what you think. Thanks!

Jon and Kate and I'm Sad

Monday, June 1, 2009

Ok, I'm almost ashamed to say this, but I love watching 'Jon and Kate + 8'. So does Denise. We are nerds. The kids are really cute, and it actually makes me look forward to parenthood. Yeah, it's weird.

Anyway, we are both sad that they do seem to be splitting up. Boo. I'm getting better at dealing with it, emotionally. I've spent a lot of time with them in the last year. Especially when Denise was in the hospital in December. She's fine now, but it was emergency gallbladder surgery, so it was very stressful. And during her recovery, we watched it a LOT.

So, we are watching the new season in mute horror, mostly. Ok, if they DO split up, I just want them to be friends and get along for the kids. Man, can't believe I'm dealing with it. I wish I wasn't, though. I bet they do too. Hmm.
